New committee aims to boost networking and membership

Posted December 13, 2017

MDSPE is assembling a new Membership and Programs Committee.

“We need to network more as a society and grow our membership,” said MDSPE President Tory Pierce.

So Brian Schlosser, MDSPE’s Vice President of Membership, is currently assembling a committee to develop fresh ideas for networking events as well as to develop new ways to inform engineers about the benefits of being members of MDSPE.

A fairly new member of the society, Schlosser said he understands that individuals and companies who have limited time and funds to dedicate to association memberships, often join discipline-specific organizations, thinking those focused organizations will deliver more benefits.

“But what I have learned since joining MDSPE is that there are great benefits in networking with people from other disciplines,” Schlosser said. “You meet people from other disciplines that you can team up with on projects and there is a strong benefit there.”

“In an organization like MDSPE, there is also an opportunity to network with managers of businesses and get to know other companies,” Pierce said. “That can really broaden your horizons and that can be very helpful if you are looking for new project partners or new professional opportunities.”

The Membership and Programs Committee is still forming so it hasn’t yet laid firm plans. Proposals, however, have surfaced for an event at a brewery, which would explore mechanical engineering aspects of craft brewers.
