Icon of the Industry Award Winner - James Soltesz, P.E. of Soltesz Inc.

James A. Soltesz is President & CEO of Soltesz, Inc., headquartered in Rockville, Md. Since joining the firm in 1990, Jim has been leading the development and execution of the company’s strategy with a focus on creating lasting value for clients and staff. Soltesz,  which employs over 140 professionals in six offices throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia, has provided civil engineering, surveying, environmental consulting and planning services for nearly 40 years on many of the largest development projects in the Washington metropolitan area, including National Harbor and the MGM Casino & Resort, Downtown Silver Spring, North Bethesda Town Center, Viva/White Oak and Konterra, among many others. Jim has a very thorough understanding of local, county, and State of Maryland regulatory processes and is often called upon by clients and colleagues for assistance with their development projects, being recognized as a leading expert in the local land use and entitlements market. 

Jim has served on numerous local committees on development issues including transportation, adequate public facilities, infrastructure financing, school construction, and permit processing. Jim is an MBIA Life Director and an active member of the association. He frequently speaks at various industry associations and coalitions, and at community and educational events for students. Jim has a keen insight into the maximization of cultural, natural and physical features of existing sites and into the importance of environmental stewardship. Most recently, Jim has played an integral role on current stormwater regulations and permitting, having led Soltesz in their role as Lead Designer for the Clean Water Partnership, a first of its kind Public-Private Partnership for MS-4 compliance. 

Jim is well acquainted with local political leaders and in tune with legislative matters, having been appointed to numerous political committees. He served on the Transition Teams for Maryland Governor-Elect Larry Hogan, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, WSSC General Manager Carla Reid, as well as former Maryland Governor Parris Glendening. Jim served as a chair for Governor Hogan’s Regulatory Reform Committee in 2015, and chaired Montgomery County Executive Isaiah Leggett’s Economic Advisory Group.

Jim was named Executive of the Year by the Business Gazette in 2004 and was inducted into the Montgomery County Business Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jim grew up in Ohio and he received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Maryland and Virginia. Jim and his wife are residents of Potomac, Maryland and have three children.
