Meet your President, Tory Pierce

Posted August 30, 2017

Tory Pierce is the President of Frederick Ward Associates and also serves as the President of The Maryland Society of Professional Engineers.

Pierce wanted to be an architect when he grew up.

But his home state of Delaware didn’t have a school of architecture, so Pierce opted to study structural engineering and quickly discovered new interests in an engineer’s decision-making process, predicting outcomes of designs and participating in reconstructions and analyses in forensic engineering.

For the last 30 years, Pierce has worked at Frederick Ward Associates in Bel Air.

“What I have really liked about my job is we get to see our designs constructed,” he said. “We do small to mid-size projects that are built within a two- to three-year period. In a big firm, it might take 10 years before you see your work constructed.”

And those small projects have added up to a big impact.

“We were very busy designing new communities. We probably designed 50,000 new homes in Harford County over a 15-year period, so we saw our community transformed into what it is today,” Pierce said.

It was that interest in local development that prompted Pierce to become a member of MDSPE 10 years ago. He joined so that he could represent professional engineers on a committee that Harford County was assembling to rewrite the zoning code. His duties, however, quickly expanded to helping with MDSPE’s overall legislative and professional education efforts.

Now the President of Frederick Ward Associates, Pierce gets special satisfaction from helping young engineers build their careers.

“We are focused on grooming new engineers and training them to be the best they can be,” he said.
